For example, light can be described as both a wave and a stream of particles called photons. Similarly, electrons can behave like particles when they are detected but exhibit wave-like characteristics when they are not.

Wave-particle duality is best illustrated by the famous double-slit experiment. In this experiment, a beam of light or particles is directed at a barrier with two slits. When both slits are open, an interference pattern emerges on a screen behind the barrier, indicating wave-like behavior. However, when the experiment is conducted with individual particles, each particle seems to pass through one slit or the other, behaving like a particle. Remarkably, if one attempts to measure which slit the particle goes through, the interference pattern disappears, suggesting that the act of measurement alters the behavior of the particle.

3. Superposition and Entanglement

Two other fundamental concepts in quantum physics are superposition and entanglement, both of which challenge classical intuitions.

3.1 Superposition

Superposition refers to the ability of a quantum system to exist in multiple states simultaneously. For instance, an electron in an atom can be in a superposition of different energy levels until it is measured. Upon measurement, the electron ‘collapses’ into one of the possible states. This phenomenon is famously illustrated by Schrödinger’s cat thought experiment, where a cat in a sealed box is simultaneously alive and dead until someone opens the box to observe it.

3.2 Entanglement

Entanglement is a quantum phenomenon where two or more particles become interconnected, such that the state of one particle instantly influences the state of another, regardless of the distance separating them. This leads to what Einstein referred to as “spooky action at a distance.” If two entangled particles are measured, the result of one measurement will instantaneously determine the result of the other, even if they are light-years apart. This phenomenon has been experimentally verified and is a key resource for emerging technologies like quantum computing and quantum cryptography.

4. The Uncertainty Principle

One of the most famous principles in quantum physics is Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle, which states that it is impossible to simultaneously know both the position and momentum of a particle with absolute certainty. The more precisely one property is measured, the less precisely the other can be known. This principle highlights a fundamental limit to measurement and observation at the quantum level, suggesting that the act of observing a particle changes its state.

Quantum tunneling is another fascinating phenomenon where particles can pass through barriers that would be insurmountable according to classical physics. For example, an electron can tunnel through an energy barrier rather than going over it. This process is crucial in many physical phenomena, including nuclear fusion in stars and the operation of modern electronic devices like transistors.

Quantum computers leverage the principles of superposition and entanglement to perform calculations at speeds unattainable by classical computers. Unlike classical bits, which can represent either a 0 or a 1, quantum bits (qubits) can represent both simultaneously. This allows quantum computers to solve complex problems, such as factoring large numbers or simulating molecular interactions, much more efficiently.

6.2 Quantum Cryptography

Quantum cryptography uses the principles of quantum mechanics to create secure communication channels. The most well-known protocol, Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), allows two parties to share a secret key with the guarantee that any attempt at eavesdropping will be detected. This is made possible by the inherent properties of quantum states and the Uncertainty Principle.

Quantum sensors exploit quantum phenomena to achieve unprecedented sensitivity and precision in measurements. These sensors can be used in various applications, from gravitational wave detection to medical imaging, offering improvements over classical sensors.
